The RethinkX aim is to inspire a global conversation about the threats and opportunities of technology driven disruptions and to focus attention on choices that can help lead to a more equitable, healthy, resilient, and stable society.

Rethinking Food and Agriculture is our second in a series of reports that analyze the effects of technology disruption, sector by sector, across the global economy. Our study is built on the Seba Technology Disruption Framework set out in our report Rethinking Transportation 2020-2030 (published May 2017).

We aim to produce analyses that reflect the reality of fast-paced, technology adoption S-curves.

Mainstream analysts tend to produce forecasts that ignore the complexity of our global systems, and therefore, consistently underplay the speed and extent of technological disruptions across global sectors by new and emerging technologies like precision fermentation, solar PV and electric vehicles.

By relying on these mainstream forecasts, policymakers, investors, and businesses risk locking in inadequate or misguided policies and investments, misallocating resources and creating negative feedback loops that lead to massive wealth, resource, and job destruction as well as increased social instability and vulnerability.

In our report, we find that, due to rapid improvement in the cost and capabilities of technologies like precision fermentation, genome sequencing, and CRISPR, and a new model of production we call Food-as-Software, the cost of proteins would be 10x cheaper than existing animal proteins by 2035, while the number of cows in the U.S. would have fallen by 50% and the cattle farming industry would effectively be bankrupt by 2030.

We want to initiate a global discussion around the importance of these emerging technologies, and highlight the importance of implementing them correctly.
